12 Simple Steps
- 1Set up: Place a chowki with red cloth in the north-east or north. Put Ganesha on your left and Lakshmi on your right. Keep a kalash beside them.
- 2Purify: Sprinkle Gangajal on yourself, the family and the puja place.
- 3Light the main lamp: A ghee lamp before the Goddess. Say: "Deepajyoti Parabrahma, deepajyoti Janardanah."
- 4Sankalp: With water and akshat in hand, say: "I am worshipping Maa Lakshmi and Ganesha on Diwali for the happiness and prosperity of my family." Release the water.
- 5Ganesh puja: Offer roli, akshat, durva, flowers and a laddoo. Chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" 11 times.
- 6Kalash puja: Offer roli, akshat and flowers to the kalash with "Om Varunaya Namah."
- 7Lakshmi snan: Sprinkle water, then a little panchamrit, then water again (or symbolically with a betel leaf).
- 8Shringar: Offer a red chunri, tilak of roli and kumkum, bangles and bindi.
- 9Flowers and special items: Lotus or roses, kamal gatta, a silver coin and dhaniya seeds.
- 10Bhog: Kheel-batashe, sweets, fruits, and paan with supari and clove.
- 11Mantra japa: "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah" 108 times (or 11 times if short of time).
- 12Account book, safe and lamps: Draw a swastika on the safe and account book, then light all diyas from the main lamp and place them around the house. Perform "Om Jai Lakshmi Mata" aarti and distribute prasad.
Roles for Family Members
- •Elders: lead the sankalp and aarti.
- •Couple: perform the main puja together — sitting together is considered auspicious.
- •Children: make rangoli, arrange diyas, ring the bell during aarti.
- •Everyone: chant the mantra together.
If You Live in a Flat or Small Home
Use a small stool or a clean shelf as the chowki, a small brass lota as the kalash, and clay diyas on the balcony and main door. Keep lamps away from curtains.
Common Doubts
- •No idol? A picture works perfectly.
- •No kalash? A lota with water and mango leaves is enough.
- •Can women perform the puja alone? Yes, absolutely.
- •Can we eat before the puja? Many fast till the puja; if you can't, eat a light sattvic meal.
