Kalash Sthapana at Home: Quick Answer
To do kalash sthapana at home, clean the north-east corner, sow barley in a clay pot, fill a copper or clay kalash with water, Gangajal, a coin, supari, akshat, turmeric and durva, place five mango leaves and a red-wrapped coconut on it, and invoke Ganesha, Varuna and Maa Durga with mantras — all within the Ghatasthapana muhurat on Pratipada. In 2026 this is Sunday, 11 October; the Abhijit muhurat in Delhi (11:44 AM–12:31 PM) is preferred this year. See the full Ghatasthapana muhurat 2026.

Choosing the Right Place and Direction
- •North-east (Ishaan kon) is the most auspicious place for the kalash, as it is considered the direction of the divine.
- •If that is not possible, use the east or north side of the puja room.
- •Sit facing east or north while performing the puja.
- •Avoid placing the kalash in a bedroom, under a staircase, or near the bathroom.
- •The place should be clean, quiet and accessible for daily puja, but not where people walk constantly.
Step-by-Step Ghatasthapana Vidhi
Step 1: Purification and sankalp Bathe, wear clean clothes and sprinkle Gangajal on yourself and the puja area while chanting *"Om apavitrah pavitro va sarvavastham gato'pi va, yah smaret pundarikaksham sa bahyabhyantarah shuchih."* Then, holding water, akshat, flowers and a coin, state your name, gotra, the date and your wish, and take the sankalp of Navratri vrat and puja.
Step 2: Install the Goddess Place a wooden chowki in the chosen corner, spread a red cloth and install the idol or picture of Maa Durga. Make a small heap of akshat in front of it for Ganesha.
Step 3: Sow the barley (jau) Fill the clay pot with a layer of soil. Spread barley seeds soaked overnight, add a thin layer of soil, and sprinkle water. Some families do it in three layers of soil and seeds. Barley is chosen because it is considered the first grain of creation, and its sprouts are believed to reflect the year ahead.
Step 4: Prepare the kalash Draw a swastika on the kalash with roli and tie kalava three or five times around its neck. Fill it about three-quarters with clean water and add Gangajal. Then add a coin, supari, akshat, a turmeric knot, durva and, if available, sarvaushadhi and panchratna. While filling the kalash, chant the kalash mantra:
"Kalashasya mukhe Vishnuh kanthe Rudrah samashritah, mule tvasya sthito Brahma madhye matriganah smritah. Kukshau tu sagarah sarve saptadvipa vasundhara, Rigvedo'tha Yajurvedah Samavedo hyatharvanah."
Step 5: Mango leaves and coconut Arrange five mango leaves at the mouth of the kalash, tips facing outward. Place a plate of rice or the lid on top if you like. Wrap the coconut in red chunri, tie kalava and place it on the kalash with its *jata* (tip) facing upward and towards you.
Step 6: Place the kalash Place the kalash in the centre of the barley pot or beside it, on the right side of the Goddess's picture (from your view, on the left — follow your family custom).
Step 7: Invoke the deities - **Ganesha:** *"Om Gam Ganapataye Namah"* — offer roli, akshat and flowers. - **Varuna in the kalash:** *"Om Varunaya Namah"* — invite Varuna Dev and all sacred rivers into the water. - **Maa Durga:** *"Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche"* — invoke the Goddess into the kalash and the picture.
Step 8: Panchopachar or shodashopachar puja Offer sandalwood, flowers, incense, a lamp and naivedya (the five-fold panchopachar). If you know the sixteen-step shodashopachar, you can perform it.
Step 9: Akhand Jyot (if traditional) Light the Akhand Jyot now, if your family keeps it. See our guide on [Akhand Jyot rules](/guides/navratri-akhand-jyot-niyam-disha).
Step 10: Worship Maa Shailputri, path and aarti Worship the first form, Maa Shailputri, recite the Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa, perform aarti, and close with the prayer for forgiveness: *"Aavahanam na janami na janami visarjanam, pujam chaiva na janami kshamasva Parameshwari."*
Daily Care of the Kalash (Days 2–9)
- •Worship the kalash every morning and evening with roli, akshat, flowers and a lamp.
- •Sprinkle a little water on the barley daily — not too much, or the seeds may rot.
- •Don't move or shift the kalash during the nine days.
- •If the coconut starts to spoil, you can replace it respectfully, though this is rare.
- •Keep the area clean and avoid touching the kalash with unclean hands.
Visarjan After Navratri
On Navami after the puja, or on Vijayadashami morning (20 October in 2026), gently lift the kalash after a final aarti. Sprinkle its water across the house with mango leaves. Keep the coin and supari in your locker. Distribute the barley sprouts as prasad and immerse the rest in flowing water or under a tree. The coconut can be broken and shared as prasad.
Common Mistakes
- •Using a plastic, steel or broken pot — prefer copper, brass or clay.
- •Placing the kalash in the south-west or south.
- •Doing kalash sthapana at night or after Pratipada ends.
- •Keeping the coconut lying flat or with the tip facing downward.
- •Leaving the barley dry or overwatering it.
Summary
Kalash sthapana at home is simple when done step by step: purify, take sankalp, sow barley, prepare the kalash, place mango leaves and the coconut, invoke Ganesha, Varuna and Maa Durga, and worship daily. Do it in the north-east during the Ghatasthapana muhurat on 11 October 2026, look after the kalash for nine days, and perform visarjan with gratitude on Navami or Dussehra.
