Ghatasthapana Muhurat 2026: Quick Answer
Ghatasthapana for Shardiya Navratri 2026 will be performed on Sunday, 11 October 2026. In New Delhi the morning muhurat is 6:19 AM to 10:12 AM (3 hours 53 minutes) and the Abhijit muhurat is 11:44 AM to 12:31 PM (47 minutes). Because Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga are present all day on 11 October, the Abhijit muhurat is considered the best time for kalash sthapana this year. Pratipada tithi lasts from 9:19 PM on 10 October to 9:30 PM on 11 October.
What Is Ghatasthapana?
Ghatasthapana — also called Kalash Sthapana — is the opening ritual of Navratri. A sacred pot (ghat or kalash) filled with holy water is installed and Goddess Durga is invoked into it. Next to it, barley (jau) seeds are sown in a clay vessel. The kalash represents the universe, and the sprouting barley symbolises growth and prosperity. The kalash is worshipped every day for the nine days and is ceremonially moved (visarjan) after Navami or on Vijayadashami.
Scriptures say that the kalash holds all deities: "Kalashasya mukhe Vishnuh kanthe Rudrah samashritah, mule tvasya sthito Brahma madhye matriganah smritah" — Vishnu at its mouth, Rudra at its neck, Brahma at its base, and the Mother Goddesses in its middle. That is why Ghatasthapana must be done in an auspicious muhurat.

The Shastric Rules Behind the Muhurat
Classical texts such as the Nirnaya Sindhu and Devi Purana set out these rules for Ghatasthapana:
- 1Pratipada tithi is essential. Kalash sthapana must be done while Pratipada prevails. In 2026 Pratipada is present all through the day of 11 October, until 9:30 PM.
- 2The first one-third of the day is best. The ideal window is the first third of daytime after sunrise — that is the morning muhurat shown above.
- 3Before midday. If the morning window is missed, Ghatasthapana should be completed in the Abhijit muhurat around midday.
- 4Avoid Chitra and Vaidhriti. The texts advise avoiding Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga. When they cannot be avoided, the Abhijit muhurat is recommended.
- 5Never at night or on Amavasya. Ghatasthapana is not done after sunset, and not when Amavasya is present at the time.
Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga in 2026
On 11 October 2026, Chitra nakshatra runs from 9:42 PM on 10 October to 10:32 PM on 11 October, and Vaidhriti yoga runs from 10:02 PM on 10 October to 9:05 PM on 11 October. Both cover the entire daytime, so there is no window free of them. In such years most panchang makers and acharyas follow the rule given in the scriptures — perform Ghatasthapana in the Abhijit muhurat. The Abhijit muhurat is said to neutralise many doshas, as explained in our guide on Abhijit muhurat. If your schedule does not allow it, the morning muhurat is still acceptable, because these are "best avoided" rather than "forbidden".
Choghadiya on 11 October 2026 (New Delhi, approximate)
| Choghadiya | Time | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Udveg | 6:19 – 7:46 AM | Avoid |
| Chal | 7:46 – 9:12 AM | Neutral (acceptable) |
| Labh | 9:12 – 10:39 AM | Auspicious |
| Amrit | 10:39 AM – 12:05 PM | Most auspicious |
| Kaal | 12:05 – 1:32 PM | Avoid |
The Amrit choghadiya (10:39 AM – 12:05 PM) overlaps with the start of the Abhijit muhurat. So the window 11:44 AM to 12:05 PM in Delhi combines Pratipada, Abhijit muhurat and Amrit choghadiya — an excellent time for kalash sthapana. Rahu Kaal on Sunday falls in the late afternoon (about 4:25 PM to 5:51 PM), so it does not affect the Ghatasthapana window. Learn more about how to read choghadiya and Rahu Kaal.

Mistakes to Avoid
- •Don't place the kalash directly on the floor without a base of soil, grain or a plate.
- •Don't use broken, chipped or rusted vessels.
- •Don't do Ghatasthapana after sunset.
- •Don't move the kalash during the nine days once it is installed.
- •Don't let the barley dry out — sprinkle water daily.
Summary
In 2026, Ghatasthapana falls on Sunday, 11 October. The morning muhurat in Delhi is 6:19 to 10:12 AM, but because of Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga, the Abhijit muhurat (11:44 AM to 12:31 PM) is the preferred choice. The overlap with Amrit choghadiya until 12:05 PM makes the start of the Abhijit window especially auspicious. Install the kalash in the north-east corner, sow barley, invoke the Goddess and begin your nine-day worship with devotion.
