Gangaur Puja Vidhi: Quick Answer
Gangaur puja is the worship of Isar (Shiva) and Gaur (Parvati), done daily from Dhulandi — Monday 22 March 2027 — until Gangaur on Friday, 9 April 2027. Each morning, women and girls bring durva and flowers, fill a kalash with water, and worship Isar-Gaur while singing Gangaur songs. On Gangaur day they fast, apply sixteen dots of kumkum, mehendi and kajal on the wall, offer gune and suhag items, hear the katha, and in the evening take Gauri to a water body to "drink water" before immersion.
Samagri
Clay or painted wooden idols of Isar-Gaur, a chowki with a red cloth, kalash, durva, flowers, roli, kumkum, mehendi, kajal, akshat, chunari, bangles and bindi, gune or other sweets, fruits, a ghee lamp and dhoop.
Daily Puja (22 March – 8 April)
- 1Bathe and sit before Isar-Gaur.
- 2Sprinkle water with durva on the idols, singing the traditional songs.
- 3Offer roli, akshat and flowers; light a lamp.
- 4Count the days — many families mark a dot on the wall each day.
Gangaur Day (9 April)
Fast with a single meal, dress in solah shringar, decorate Gauri, offer gune and suhag items, hear the katha, and in the afternoon or evening take Gauri to a well, pond or lake for the water-offering and visarjan.
Making the Isar-Gaur Idols
On Dhulandi (22 March 2027), shape small figures of Isar and Gaur from the ash of the Holika fire or clean clay — Gaur as a woman and Isar with a turban — and place Gaur on Isar's left on a chowki covered with red cloth. Families with painted wooden heirloom idols clean them and dress them in new clothes instead.
Sinjara (8 April)
Married daughters and daughters-in-law receive ghevar, mehendi, clothes, bangles and jewellery from their parents' home. Women apply mehendi, Gauri is adorned, and the evening is filled with songs and dance.
The Gangaur Katha in Brief
Shiva, Parvati and Narad visited a village. Poor women came first with simple offerings, and Parvati sprinkled suhag ras on them. When wealthy women arrived later with lavish thalis, Parvati blessed them with drops of her own blood. She then worshipped a sand Shivalinga by the river, and Shiva granted that any woman who worships with devotion on this day will have lasting marital happiness.
Gangaur Songs
The songs — learned orally from elder women — cover fetching durva, praying for suhag, offering water to Gauri and her farewell when Isar comes to take her home. Wooden idols are only symbolically "given water" and kept for the next year.
Summary
Worship Isar-Gaur daily from 22 March; on 9 April 2027 complete the fast, katha and visarjan.
