What Is Gangaur?
"Gan" refers to Shiva (Isar) and "Gaur" to Parvati (Gauri). Married women worship Gauri for marital happiness and their husband's long life; unmarried girls pray for a good husband. It is Rajasthan's most loved women's festival and falls on the third day of Chaitra Navratri in 2027.
Vrat Vidhi
- 1From Dhulandi, girls and women make clay or use painted wooden idols of Isar-Gaur and worship them each morning with durva, flowers and water.
- 2On Sinjara, daughters receive ghevar, mehendi, clothes and jewellery from their parents.
- 3On Gangaur, married women fast (usually a single meal), apply sixteen dots of kumkum, mehendi and kajal on the wall, offer gune and sweets, and hear the Gangaur katha.

In Jaipur, the royal Gangaur sawari leaves from Tripolia Gate of the City Palace through Tripolia Bazaar and Chhoti Chaupar on 9 and 10 April. In Udaipur, the festivities centre on Gangaur Ghat at Lake Pichola.
A New Bride's First Gangaur
A newly married woman traditionally worships her first Gangaur at her parents' home. Her in-laws send the Sinjara gifts — ghevar, chunari, jewellery and mehendi — and she worships Isar-Gaur with her friends for the full 16–18 days. Many homes also perform a symbolic wedding of Isar and Gaur on Gangaur day. Afterwards her husband or in-laws come to take her home, a theme that runs through many Gangaur songs.
Do's and Don'ts
Dress in solah shringar, ideally a leheriya or chunari; offer suhag items to Gauri and then wear them; seek elder women's blessings; eat a single sattvic meal. By custom, Gangaur prasad is not given to men, and nothing plastic should go into the water during visarjan.
