Karwa Chauth 2026 Moonrise: Quick Answer
On Karwa Chauth, Thursday 29 October 2026, the moon rises at 8:17 PM in New Delhi and 8:28 PM in Jaipur. It rises earliest in the east — Kolkata 7:47 PM, Patna 7:52 PM — and latest in the west and south — Mumbai 9:00 PM, Bengaluru 8:55 PM, Ahmedabad 8:52 PM. Chaturthi lasts until 10:09 PM, so arghya should be offered after moonrise and preferably before then.

Why Does Moonrise Differ Between Cities?
The moon rises in the east and, like the sun, appears earlier in eastern cities and later in western ones. Latitude also matters, so southern cities such as Bengaluru see it later than Delhi despite being further east than Mumbai.
Moonrise Time vs Seeing the Moon
The listed moonrise is when the moon crosses the ideal flat horizon. In cities, buildings, trees and haze mean you may actually see the moon 10–30 minutes later. Go to an open terrace facing east. If the sky is clear, you'll spot it a little above the eastern horizon.
What If It's Cloudy?
- •Wait until after the listed moonrise time for your city.
- •Many traditions allow offering arghya in the direction of the moon after its rising time even if it isn't visible.
- •Some families offer arghya to the moon on Lord Shiva's head (an image or idol) when the sky is overcast.
- •Don't break the fast before the moonrise time.
Checklist Before Moonrise
- •Arghya lota with water, a little raw milk and akshat
- •Sieve and a small ghee diya, matches
- •Puja thali with roli, sindoor, sweets, flowers
- •A glass of water and a sweet for breaking the fast
- •A glass cover for the diya if it's windy, and a torch for the stairs
Choosing the Right Spot
Identify east the evening before (28 October), pick a terrace or open ground with no tall buildings to the east, and use a compass app if needed.
