Durga Ashtami 2026: Quick Answer
Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami) 2026 falls on Monday, 19 October 2026. The Ashtami tithi begins at 8:27 AM on Sunday, 18 October and ends at 10:51 AM on Monday, 19 October. Because Ashtami prevails at sunrise on 19 October, the Ashtami fast, Maa Mahagauri puja and Ashtami kanya pujan are observed on that day. Sandhi Puja is from about 10:27 AM to 11:15 AM, and the best time for kanya pujan is in the morning, before 10:51 AM.

Why Is Ashtami on 19 October and Not 18 October?
Hindu festivals are generally observed on the tithi that prevails at sunrise (udaya tithi). On 18 October the sunrise falls in Saptami — Ashtami starts only at 8:27 AM. On 19 October, Ashtami is present at sunrise and lasts until 10:51 AM. Mainstream panchangs therefore list Durga Ashtami on Monday, 19 October. Families whose tradition is to observe the Ashtami fast for the full tithi may begin their preparations on the evening of 18 October, but the main puja and kanya pujan are done on the 19th.
Significance of Durga Ashtami
Ashtami is the most powerful day of Navratri. According to the Devi Mahatmya, it was on this tithi that the Goddess manifested in her fierce form to destroy the demons Chanda and Munda, emerging as Chamunda. The day is dedicated to Maa Mahagauri, the eighth form of Navdurga, who represents purity, forgiveness and marital happiness. In Bengal, Maha Ashtami is the heart of Durga Puja, with Pushpanjali in the morning and the Sandhi Puja at the junction of Ashtami and Navami. Many North Indian families also worship their kuldevi on Ashtami.
Sandhi Puja 2026
Sandhi Puja is performed in the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami — a 48-minute window. In 2026 this is approximately 10:27 AM to 11:15 AM on 19 October. The moment of transition (around 10:51 AM) is regarded as the instant when the Goddess slew Chanda and Munda. Traditionally, 108 lotus flowers and 108 lamps are offered, along with a special bhog. At home you can light 108 small lamps or chant the Navarna mantra "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche" 108 times during this window.
Best Muhurat for Ashtami Kanya Pujan 2026
Since Ashtami ends at 10:51 AM, finish kanya pujan in the morning:
- 1Best: about 6:25 AM to 7:50 AM (Amrit choghadiya).
- 2Good: about 9:15 AM to 10:40 AM (Shubh choghadiya), ending before Ashtami finishes.
- 3Avoid: Rahu Kaal, about 7:50 AM to 9:15 AM.
If you can't organise it in the morning, many families still perform kanya pujan later on 19 October — once Navami begins at 10:51 AM, that pujan is counted as a Navami kanya pujan. See whether kanya pujan should be done on Ashtami or Navami.
