Yama Deepam (Yam Deep Daan)
On Dhanteras evening, a four-wick earthen lamp with mustard oil is placed outside the main door facing south — the direction of Yama — in Pradosh Kaal. The Skanda Purana mantra is:
"Mrityuna pashadandabhyam kalena shyamaya saha, trayodashyam deepadanat suryajah priyatam iti."
It is believed to protect the family from untimely death. The legend tells of King Hima's son, destined to die on the fourth day of his marriage; his wife kept the house lit and piled jewels at the door, and Yama, dazzled, left without taking his life.
Significance of Dhanteras
- •Lord Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, emerged from the Samudra Manthan with the pot of amrit on this day — hence prayers for health.
- •Goddess Lakshmi and Kuber are worshipped for wealth.
- •New metal utensils, gold, silver and brooms are bought as symbols of prosperity. See what to buy on Dhanteras.
