What Is Dev Uthani Ekadashi?
On Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha, Lord Vishnu goes into yoga-nidra for four months — Chaturmas — during which weddings and other major auspicious ceremonies are traditionally paused. On Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, Vishnu awakens; hence Dev Uthani ("the Lord rises") or Prabodhini ("awakening"). With his awakening, the season of weddings, griha pravesh and other ceremonies begins again.
Puja Vidhi
1. Fast on Ekadashi (nirjala, phalahar or one meal, as per health).
2. In the evening, draw the Lord's feet with geru/rice paste in the courtyard and make a small mandap of sugarcane.
3. Place Vishnu's idol or shaligram; offer seasonal produce — sugarcane, water chestnut (singhara), sweet potato, ber, guava — along with tulsi, flowers and a lamp.
4. Wake the Lord with bells, conch and the mantra:
"Uttishtha Govinda tyaja nidram jagatpate, tvayi supte jagannatha jagat suptam bhavedidam. Utthite cheshtate sarvam uttishthottishtha Madhava."
5. Many families tap a plate (thali) or winnowing basket and sing traditional folk songs asking the Lord to wake up.
6. Light lamps across the house; stay awake in bhajan (jagran) if possible.
7. Break the fast at parana time on 21 November.
Rules
- •No rice on Ekadashi.
- •Tulsi leaves should be plucked a day before (not on Ekadashi).
- •Avoid onion, garlic, alcohol and anger.
Tulsi Vivah
On Dwadashi (21 November), many families perform the ceremonial marriage of Tulsi with Shaligram/Vishnu. See the full guide: Tulsi Vivah 2026.
End of Chaturmas
Dev Uthani Ekadashi ends the 2026 Chaturmas. Vows kept during these four months — giving up a food, one meal a day, sleeping on the floor — are concluded (udyapan) today with offerings and charity.
Special Bhog
Sugarcane, water chestnut, sweet potato, ber, guava, amla, radish and panchamrit — the produce of the new season.
Rajasthan's "Badi Gyaras"
In Rajasthan the day is called Dev Uthani Gyaras or Badi Gyaras; it opens the wedding season and is treated as an abujh sava (self-auspicious wedding day) in many communities.
