Kanya Pujan Food: Quick Answer
The traditional kanya pujan bhog is suji halwa, puri and dry black chana (kala chana) — the classic halwa-puri-chana prasad. It is often accompanied by kheer, seasonal fruit and a sweet. The food must be sattvic — cooked without onion or garlic, freshly made on the day, and first offered to the Goddess before being served to the girls. After the meal, give the girls dakshina and a small gift such as bangles, a chunri, a bindi, stationery or a fruit packet.
In 2026, kanya pujan falls on 19 October (Ashtami, before 10:51 AM) or 20 October (Navami, before 12:50 PM), so plan to start cooking early.
Why Halwa, Puri and Chana?
Each item has a meaning:
- •Halwa (sweet) — represents sweetness and prosperity, and is a favourite offering to the Goddess.
- •Puri (fried bread) — a festive, pure food that stays fresh; considered auspicious for prasad.
- •Kala chana — black chana is linked to strength and to Saturn; offering it is believed to remove obstacles.
This combination is also balanced: carbohydrates and energy from the puri and halwa, protein from the chana.

| Fruit | 10 bananas or apples, or a mixed fruit packet each |
Add extra if you expect more girls or if family members will take prasad.
Simple Recipes
Suji halwa Roast suji in ghee on low heat until golden and fragrant (8–10 minutes). Separately heat about 750 ml water with the sugar. Pour the sugar water carefully into the suji while stirring. Cook until the halwa leaves the sides of the pan; add cardamom and dry fruits.
Dry kala chana Pressure-cook the soaked chana with salt until soft but whole. In a pan, heat ghee, add jeera, grated ginger and green chilli, then the chana. Add a little dry mango powder, coriander powder and garam masala (all without onion or garlic). Cook until dry and coated.
Puri Knead a stiff dough with wheat flour, a little ghee and water. Rest for 15 minutes, roll small puris and fry in hot oil until puffed.
