Why 25 August?
Janmashtami is fixed by Ashtami and Rohini at Nishita. In 2027, Ashtami ends at 7:19 PM on 25 August, before midnight, but Rohini is present at midnight on 25–26 August. Both Smarta and Vaishnava traditions are expected to observe the night of 25 August — confirm with your local temple.
Puja Vidhi
- 1Fast through the day; take a sankalp in the morning.
- 2Decorate a cradle and jhanki for Laddu Gopal.
- 3At midnight, bathe Bal Krishna with panchamrit, dress him, and rock the cradle.
- 4Offer makhan-mishri, panjiri, tulsi, and 56 bhog where possible.
- 5Sing bhajans and perform aarti.
The Story of Krishna's Birth
Kansa, the tyrant king of Mathura, imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after a prophecy that their eighth child would kill him. At midnight on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, in Rohini nakshatra, Krishna was born in the prison. The guards fell asleep, the chains opened, and Vasudeva carried the baby across the flooded Yamuna — sheltered by Sheshnag — to Gokul, where he exchanged him with Yashoda's newborn daughter, Yogmaya.
Why 56 Bhog?
Krishna held up Govardhan Hill for seven days without eating. Mother Yashoda fed him eight times a day, so afterwards 7 × 8 = 56 dishes were prepared for him. At home, makhan-mishri, panjiri and tulsi are enough.
Fasting Rules
Start the fast with a sattvic dinner the night before. On the day, avoid grains and take fruit, milk, makhana, kuttu or singhara dishes, sabudana and sendha namak. Only healthy adults should keep a nirjala fast. Eat prasad only after the midnight puja.
Summary
Janmashtami 2027 is on 25 August; Nishita puja 12:01–12:45 AM (Delhi). Celebrate Dahi Handi on 26 August.
