The Rule
Holika Dahan is done on Phalguna Purnima in Pradosh Kaal, free of Bhadra. When Bhadra extends beyond midnight, the scriptures allow the Pradosh-time Dahan (avoiding Bhadra Mukha) — the main muhurat above — while some follow the dawn window after Bhadra.
Puja Vidhi
- 1Bathe, face east or north at the Holika site.
- 2Offer water, roli, akshat, flowers, raw turmeric, moong, batashe, gulal, coconut and new wheat/barley ears.
- 3Wind raw cotton thread (kachcha soot) around the Holika three or seven times while circling it.
- 4Light the fire in the muhurat; roast the new grain ears and share them as prasad.
- 5Pray to Lord Narasimha and remember Prahlad.
The Story
Hiranyakashipu's son Prahlad was a devotee of Vishnu. His aunt Holika, immune to fire, sat with Prahlad in a fire to kill him — but she burned and Prahlad survived. Holika Dahan celebrates the victory of devotion over arrogance.
Holi Safety Tips
Apply coconut or mustard oil to your skin and hair before playing so the colour washes off easily. Wear old full-sleeved clothes and prefer natural or herbal colours. If colour gets into your eyes, rinse with clean cold water without rubbing, and see a doctor if irritation persists. Never put colour on animals, and avoid bhang or any intoxicant if you will be driving. A besan-curd-turmeric ubtan removes colour better than harsh soap.
A Harvest Festival Too
Holika Dahan is also a harvest offering. The new wheat and barley ears ("hola") are roasted in the fire and offered to the gods first; families eat the new grain only after this.
