Vikram Samvat (Bikram Samvat) is the year count printed on many Hindi panchangs. In the North Indian civil style the year increases at Chaitra Shukla Pratipada — around March, not at Gregorian New Year. After 19 March 2026 the day pages show 2083 until the next Chaitra.
The number is a label for the lunar year, not an extra astronomical calculation. We map it from published Chaitra Pratipada dates so August 2026 is 2083, while early March 2026 is still 2082.
Gujarati panchangs often turn the year at Kartik instead. Rajasthan newspapers usually follow the Chaitra style. If your family uses Kartik new year, the printed VS on this site may differ by a few months — the tithi and sunrise do not.
